The original shelter worked by making terrible events happen outside to an increasing degree until it was literally the safest place on earth. I feel like the aberration would need a similar but slightly differing effect.
I could see it as it slowly causing the minds of wing near it to become more corrupted until they keep launching assaults on the branch. While also causing those inside to start becoming more paranoid that everyone on the outside wants to harm them. Thus when the Limbussy crew gets inside they think they are there to harm them and the Wing can slip in to actually harm them, causing chaos.
