ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — A water resources spokesman shared a video of the water rushing over the spillway at the North Fork reservoir four weeks ago at the peak of Helene during an Oct. 25 briefing.
Clay Chandler, public information officer for the City of Asheville's Water Resources Department, said the reservoir rose at least 18 feet during the storm, causing the spillways to begin releasing water.
Chandler said the spillways functioned properly despite the surge, ultimately preventing the dam from failing.
He said failure would have been "catastrophic."
"If that North Fork dam had failed and unleashed six billion gallons of water, it would've meant complete annihilation of everything and every person between Black Mountain and Biltmore Village," Chandler said.
