To me, I do love the 1911, but today it's a weapon of tradition, not of practicality. It's good enough that you could still count on it in a civilian life setting, if it's what you want, though you should be informed and clear about its actual pros and cons.

Could you do better today? Sure.
Could you still go with a 1911? Yeah, it's gonna do alright, just be sure that you know it exactly.

Partially because of their long history and how anyone can just make them these days, and again, they are a traditional weapon (and that's a good thing, it's a tradition worth celebrating and appreciating).
