No it's not that simple, because then you have to explain how these old ass otaku and fans have even less understanding of the references they're making about the show they grew up with, than then newer generations who watched the same show and became fans too. No one's saying they can't make references, but references need to lead to things or supplement things in the overall show, and that's why people have an issue with the show. All of those references are squandered and wasted material that could have been better put to making a longer run out of the show rather just be "hey, member, xyz? We member."
