Well, anime is entertainment after all, so that's true.
Interpreting and giving meaning to stories
For example, in episode 6, there is a question about the meaning of Nyaan's book.
It may represent the character's inner world or hint at the story.
Even if it's just a pattern straight out of the director's or creator's bookshelf, I can interpret what influences they have had and how they are reflected in the story, even if it's unconscious (this isn't far-fetched or sophistry).
If this is just the director's favorite idol, then this kind of speculation is completely disconnected from the story and therefore meaningless (the only thing that matters is that the director is an idol fan), so I feel like it doesn't really matter.
Of course, that doesn't mean it's not fun.

Extremely unpopular opinion, but I think the problem with most mecha anime is, ironically enough, there's not enough robots. They'll often spend 90% of an episode trying to resolve drama or talking about things, and maybe if you're lucky they'll have a robot fight at some point. Betterman was REALLY guilty with this. Half the episode felt like you were reading a CTRL+ALT+DELETE combat, and you rarely ever saw the Kakuseijin or Tyran.

Sometimes you just wanna see robots duke it out, without needing context. Like a barfight between giant robots.

I sort of get what anon means, I'll happily watch LOGH if I know I'm watching LOGH, if a show somehow tricks you into a politics seminar, or the action-heavy first half of the show gets sidelined as the background political information is now front and center for the rest of the show, then I'd be rather annoyed. No it's not that simple, because then you have to explain how these old ass otaku and fans have even less understanding of the references they're making about the show they grew up with, than then newer generations who watched the same show and became fans too. No one's saying they can't make references, but references need to lead to things or supplement things in the overall show, and that's why people have an issue with the show. All of those references are squandered and wasted material that could have been better put to making a longer run out of the show rather just be "hey, member, xyz? We member."
