You're planning on living in another part of the country under an assumed name any way. That way you don't have to worry for the rest of your life about the authorities somehow finding you.

Depending on the era, locale, and particular arrangements, there's going to be at least three, possibly as many as seven other people present at the duel besides you and your opponent. One of them will be your opponent's second who he handpicked to act as his representative in a literal life-or-death matter, meaning they're probably pretty close. There would also be a spare set of weapons at hand, plus everyone present would be a gentleman and thus have a non-zero chance of packing. Shooting your opponent in the back (with a single-shot pistol no less) isn't going to end well for you.
