It's the bald+beard combo that has been adapted by weak "men" in an attempt to project masculinity. A beard in itself isn't masculine, in fact it signals hormone sensitivity. But men doing masculine things in cold climate grew their beards for comfort, and their behavior was eventually associated with their rugged looks. That association has shifted, in a quite funny way. If this was something found in nature, it would be like if something that practiced mimicry (a harmless black and yellow fly) superseded the model (wasp).
