This is literally how most people ate for thousands of years, especially those who worked laborious jobs (i.e. calorie deficient). If you're weightlifting and working out heavy (twice a day is heavy) then yes, you need calories in that format. It's about not trying to raise your glycemic load too high and provide steady energy throughout the day, especially when your body is healing during rest days.

Me personally? I gain weight like crazy, muscle and fat and for some reason, varying my portions is what has consistently worked to keep me from putting on too much fat but not lose much muscle.
