I doubt Shakespeare intended this. But you could make the argument that the teens killed themselves BECAUSE they were superficially head-over-heals for eachother. Like, the family feud stuff didn't give them the time to properly sort out their feelings and get to know eachother.
It's more interesting when it's not interpreted as a story about love, but the missed potential for love because of the families' conflict.
Also, the side characters were way more interesting anyways.
