Obesity was less of a problem way back when. Science Fiction fandom was overwhelmingly well educated, white and male. Yes, there were fewer female SF fans in general, but a LOT of them were concentrated in the "Japanimation" fringe fandom. A lot of the movers and shakers and early leaders of what became anime fandom were female. So yeah, equal gender distribution was a thing in early anime fandom, especially among the more active anime fans.
