Simple evolutionary pressure, strong instincts developed to copulate with the female, far stronger than any instinct to take care of the offspring. I think a good portion of male investment in their offspring is a social construct and men simply have an easier time adapting to such things because it feels neutral to them, it doesn't violate their primal instincts.
