Seems like Eastern is in the best place to survive if they have competent leadership. Ypsilanti sucks but is so close to Ann Arbor that students there can LARP like they're attending UM. The western suburbs keep growing even if the state overall has stagnated. If they could Techwood the housing projects, the western creep of Detroit's suburbs and the expansion of Ann Arbor would make gentrification happen.
But competent leadership is far from guaranteed, especially at down market schools. I've never been a big fan of them leaning into the decaying rustbelt identity. Play up having the UM experience at a lower cost and with less effort instead of advertising that it's a decaying dump.
