You're right, but even then I'd still cut Issei more slack than most. Having a shit childhood or being bullied is one thing, but getting mocked and then murdered on a first date is just brutal. It's also a trauma specifically related to romance which I think is a fitting obstacle to overcome for a character whose ambition is to love several women.
