Some people, like Tarja and Clive post-timeskip, get their brands removed via having the entire chunk of skin around their mark removed, which obviously leaves a gigantic scar on their face. It can't be tattoo'd over or removed piecemeal because the ink is poisonous and if disturbed kills the bearer.
If people do this, then you would think having a suspiciously large patch of scar tissue on the left side of your face right where a bearer's mark would be would basically be seen as akin to once having had a bearer's mark and thus still being a bearer, but this is never addressed.
