I knew a guy who had that happen, either it was from the IED which blew up the MRAP he was in, or he disconnected the headphones while disoriented, but either way he woke up hearing Avril Lavigne blasting from his iPod or phone or whatever device he was using. He swears he was listening to a soundtrack that just had Avril on there.

A big thing in American history is the whole self-reliant Jeffersonian yeoman farmer thing. It's like, I can do my own work, and think for myself. "I can do my own research." I don't need to take public transit, I know how to drive a car. Because you really did do your own research out on your farm in Tennessee or wherever. (This is also why I think guns are such a cultural value for many people, it's "I can defend myself" and goddammit you can't tell me I can't.) Basically the American revolution downgraded intellectual labor/activity and boosted manual labor on the social hierarchy so they'd be more on the same level. There is a core positive aspect to this because it was a rejection of the feudal world of Europe which had rigid class divisions. This also leads to hostility to "some class of experts out there telling me how to live" which is at the core of American populism. In my opinion though there are also negatives to that because the experts can be right about something and the masses wrong or just dumb or prone to conspiracy theories. The institutions and experts can be wrong too, or corrupt, of course.
You see this with Trump for sure, don't need to go into that, but on the left, Bernie's light version of socialism too has way more appeal than some Leninist "vanguard" party (which makes intellectual elitism a creed). Bernie talks about a cabal of "da one percent." Like a self-interested clique of elites trying to "get one over" on the common man. Americans respond to that more.
