For me, the essential elements are:
> urban fantasy
> underground (literal or metaphorical) life
> factionalism and power plays
> wack shit with earnest presentation
> city exploration-based gameplay
> simple point-based skill system, maybe perks
> first/third person preferred but not vital
Goth/punk subcultures aren't critical IMO. You could probably feasibly do it in 2000s Britain, 1910s Russian Empire or 1970s America without major losses, though another 2000s urban fantasy series could be a nice source of inspiration.
