I played another hack from the Skytemple hackjam, "Zero Dungeon: Isle of Mystery".

It barely used the jam's required gimmick and theme, and the plot was very barebones. Admittedly, the story wasn't the focus of the hack--the gameplay is the main attraction, since it switches up the PMD formula.

You're a cartographer who gets trapped in a level-reset dungeon, and you have to survive and try to escape. You have a base camp at the start, and you keep making trips into the dungeon to gather apples and supplies before Escape Orbing out (gathering apples was very easy, though, so food was never a concern). You also need to find TMs to learn any moves, which have unlimited PP, but some can only be used once per floor.

Back at the base, you use your supplies to build things. Once you've built several required things, the "story mode" ends in a very abrupt and unsatisfying way. There's also an arcade mode, which I assume just challenges you to go as far as possible. I also heard there's a second ending, but I'm not sure if I'll go back and try to get it.

The gameplay changes were interesting, and hearing Etrian Odyssey music was neat, but I wasn't particularly impressed by the hack. I feel like they could've done more with the idea, and I wish they expanded on the story by developing the protagonist's character more. Having to repeatedly run through the same dungeon and regain your reset levels got kinda tedious, but the dungeon changes the scenery, music, and enemies as you progress, and the challenge ramps up over time, so it's not as repetitive as it could've been.

I prefer story over gameplay in PMD, so that's probably why the hack didn't really grab me. Still, I mostly enjoyed playing it, all things considered. I definitely think this hack is worth a shot if you want a somewhat different take on PMD, and you're not looking for an interesting story.
