I haven’t really been able to noirpill myself either. A lot of them, they’re way too stagey and theatrical for me. Maybe I’m just the type of person who likes the curtain to be just blue — having everything down to the shadows have psychological significance, me, I don’t care for it. I definitely am also not the type of person who gets excited when someone recommends a film by saying, “Every frame looks like a painting.” That sounds stifling to me! I’d rather a film evoke profound connections between ordinary images rather than be made up of several disparate, carefully composed, Freudian images. (When people on social media are like, “Look at how beautiful this film is!” and post 4 stills that look nice, I wonder if they don’t understand that what separates cinematography from photography as an art form is that one of them moves.)
The only film noir I’m truly crazy about is Murder by Contract. I’m sure it’s only sparse because of the low budget, but this inadvertently saves the film… Instead of obnoxiously transmitting thematic ideas like a blazing fire, they, in the Bressonian sense, spark in your imagination like the flick of a matchbook, while you watch all these mundane images in this economic film. And it always feels all the more magical to me when that happens! I still remember how I gasped when that wind blew threw the grass in Tarkovsky’s Mirror.

This is why I advise my fellow waifuchads to ignore the troll, because their posts in response are equally off topic and therefore punishable.

Why would my effortposts get deleted just because they’re accompanied by a photo of Charlotte Gainsbourg??? You sound unhinged.

I agree. I’d like to think harder and find where the line is between synthetic sight and sound, and, “I know my shitty movie won’t make you cry because I’m a hack, so here’s some violins.”
