Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the entire federal defense system so spread out in the US that turning Washington to green glass wouldn't really do fuck-all other than get rid of the current figurehead (president) and close cabinet/assistants, assuming they were somehow stupid enough to just be sitting in DC AND someone somehow got a nuke over there across the ocean without getting caught? The US is really goddamn big and you don't have just one "bomb here and cut off airplane manufacturing/warships/munitions/supply lines/whatever." It isn't even a matter of dropping more bombs to make places uninhabitable because there's a gorillion acres that are already uninhabited and if you nuke it you can't scavenge it so what the hell is the point? I've never read Man in the High Castle, granted, but it sounds like they put way too much emphasis on 'cutting off the head and killing the beast' like the President is the head, not that the US is 50 mooks corralled by a separate military monster that doesn't even care about the head.
