The entire point of the games final choice is "do you walk away from the game and allow them to truly live, or do you reset again for your own pleasure". This is after the game spends alot of time making it clear that resets have happened before, sans entire character is literally discovering he's in a time loop and that he has no idea when it'll happen. That's why he's depressed, nothing matters when you'll probably just get reset. You have to either kill his brother or everyone else for him to finally care enough to half assed fight you.
