Being transgender here is not like being transgender in the USA. A lot of us just do it for the money, because life as woman is easier and because women can easily make money through prostitution. Many men need to resort to this.
Transgenderism here is not about trying to become a woman. Sayuri herself (very americanized) says she won't be a woman, she wants to be treated like a trans-woman and that is her burden to make people treat her well.
Comparing transgenders between country borders is not correct because brazilian transgenders operate in the free market of 'pass or die'. American transgenders are just political entities, men in dress demanding special privileges because they supposedly feel like women and your society does not believe in God, so it does not believe in man and woman.
