There are affordable venues, but they're in flyover states which means your general draw is not going to be very high and not worth keeping the cost of venue down. As for travel in the US, it's kinda hard because it's fucking HUGE. I know it's fun to dunk on the need for cars all over the US instead of using rail everywhere, but there are plenty of rail options between major cities that are within 3-4 hours driving distance. Upkeep on tracks just isn't worth it past industrial transport.
