if you think character design means nothing you're insane. You could tell me half of pic related's personality, role and abilities by his design alone. Character design can be deliberatly subverted, and it can be overanalyzed to mean something unintended, but saying it's meaningless, especially in a heavily visual medium like anime, is an asinine take.
