The problem with CALCIO is that it's really tough to make extensive statistics for it.
Baseball is the most stats heavy sport in the world (because every moment in baseball is discrete and measurable, it's a turn-based sport afterall), therefore it's much easier to evaluate players. You can tell someone's really good or really bad by just looking at his numbers.

But football/calcio/sucker is an extremely fluid sport. If Guy Dude scores a goal, you go "Guy Dude scored a goal, he must be good!" but how can you tell he was able to score thanks to that exact formation of his team? Maybe next game there are different center-fielders and Guy Dude can't score anymore.
No stats also means it's hard to tell if a guy is tending towards getting better or towards getting worse.
This means when managers buy players they go by fame, which is not a good indicator of player strength.

Basically the entire world of sports went balls to the wall with statistics, and le beautiful sport got left behind in the world of "is he good? i 'unno he's famous".
This wasn't such a big deal in the past because teams were a lot more in-house. But now that every single team has random ass foreign players grabbed randomly from the rest of the world, this lack of stats is really hurting
