It's a good game.
Mostly people harp on Persona because they find SMT to be more mature and gritty due to a lack of bonds and friendship theme.

I think SMT 3 and 5V are very well rounded games. Persona are great too, but the focus shifts from gameplay and exploration to story. Persona typically has a more in depth approach to its themes and symbolism than most SMT and spin-off games, not to imply SMT3 and 5 are lacking, just that Persona does more with them.
