south east is still east. Also Singapore has a strict immigration policy (they filter for only the most skilled, economically beneficial immigrants, and they refuse to even take refugees) and they have a strict legal system, with harsh punishments for things which would seem minor to many Westerners. Up until only a few decades ago they were essentially a Fascist state. To this day their government is mindful of demographic balance within the country, and aims to maintain an East Asian majority indefinitely.

In other words, their approach to government and economics is very different our Western one.
