Name one good Sonic story that Maekawa wrote, I'll wait.
Don't say Adventure 2. That began the Edgehog and the flanderization of the existing cast. Tails creating fake chaos emeralds was a disgrace and did a disservice to the worldbuilding, so much so that it was never featured again by another writer. But they could not escape the curse of Tails getting typecast to the 'genius' archetype and losing his mechanic trait that made him unique and added to his general adventurer skillset.
Adventure 2 began the issues with character writer, spitting in the face of everything Sonic Adventure and the OVA set up and established for characterization, and started the downward spiral that would culminate in the mess that was Sonic 06. Maekawa should be ashamed and he deserves to have his name dragged through the mud for ruining the world building and characters of this franchise. The only good Sonic content from a writing perspective to come out during this time period was the Advance games with Cream, genuinely bleak.

This is an absolutely retarded idea. Sonic 1, Sonic CD, and Sonic 2 aren't interesting enough stories to be adapted to anime. They'd require major creative liberties be taken if even attempted to be adapted since the source material doesn't have a large enough ensemble cast to support them. And what would happen then? Guess what, there's already a period appropriate adaptation of Sonic 1, Sonic CD, and Sonic 2 animated by gooks with creative liberties. It's called the Saturday Morning Cartoon that every windfag rags on. The fact of the matter is that there isn't really enough content to be worth adapting to an animated series until at least Sonic 3, and even that's stretching it and you'd need to take creative liberties to make Echidna society not extinct and interesting enough to the audience as well as make the environments feel lived in and worthwhile that Sonic is exploring alongside Tails while dealing with his rivalry with Knuckles. And guess what? You've just reinvented Pendersfaggotry. The fact of the matter is that the source material did not enough meat to properly support an adaptation until at least Adventure. Which is why Sonic X took the incredibly smart decision to take numerous creative liberties (some even riffing on the saturday morning show, like how they depicted the power rings) while primarily focusing on a loose adaptation of Adventure 2. The adventure games not being narratively rich is the same reason we see so many creative liberties taken with the third movie. This story just isn't that interesting to general audiences. But none of you are willing to admit that the type of stories that (debatably) work for games do not make for good television. Sonic Adventure 2 is a fucking hot mess of a story carried by game play allowing the audience to feel immersed within it. And even then, it suffers from tonal whiplash and constant PoV shifts that make it hard on the general audience to appreciate.
