It still amazes me how much more massively 'epic' Sailor Moon feels compared to every other anime. The way it builds up the characters' lives as regular people, makes them feel like they naturally are part of a larger world where they co-exist with everything, and at the same time incorporates it all part of this millennium spanning story that involves the rise and fall of kingdoms, it's something nothing else convincingly pulls off.
With something like Legend of the Galactic Heroes, there's not remotely the same sense that the directors understood how to convey the "sense of life" you get from Sailor Moon, so you end up with this absolutely massive narrative, but where the individual parts feel so much more stale and mechanical. Even with something with a much more similar premise, like Please Save My Earth, the focus is much more on this kind of almost petty shoujo style drama, and it never really conveys the "sense of significance" that SM does.
It feels bizarre how this thing is somehow tied with such a lame and repetitive MotW format that is at odds with both the subject matter and its scope, even if it greatly succeeds at doing far better than 'just' being such a show.
