Let's talk about sailor moon related games.

I frequented this general electronics store that also had video games, lots of games. Many of them were bootlegs from china, especially for Mega Drive, there were practically no official Sega stuff here, it was all bootleg, even the consoles.
I kept seeing the Sailor Moon box art, and I remember not knowing what to think of it, they looked very weird (probably the first time I saw a shoujo-style anime girl, or an anime girl at all other than Heidi and Lyn Minmay maybe). At this point I didn't know what it was, just a random game, looked too girly for me to even care, but the cover and the sailor scouts stood out to me, clearly.
Fast forward some months, maybe a year, and Sailor Moon starts being aired on TV. Initial reaction: "lol, for girls, stupid", but somehow kept watching, it was entertaining. Kind of hated the main character though, I thought she was actually too whiny and stupid.
I ended up watching the whole thing and becoming a fanatic, the last 2 episodes were incredible, 10/10 (I'm talking season 1, didn't know there was more).
It's around this time when I finally came across the game again, and I got it, and I loved it. Played it religiously, loved the graphics, the music, the levels, everything. In my kid mind, it felt as if I was "destined" to play this game, so to speak. It felt special to me.

It still amazes me how much more massively 'epic' Sailor Moon feels compared to every other anime. The way it builds up the characters' lives as regular people, makes them feel like they naturally are part of a larger world where they co-exist with everything, and at the same time incorporates it all part of this millennium spanning story that involves the rise and fall of kingdoms, it's something nothing else convincingly pulls off.
With something like Legend of the Galactic Heroes, there's not remotely the same sense that the directors understood how to convey the "sense of life" you get from Sailor Moon, so you end up with this absolutely massive narrative, but where the individual parts feel so much more stale and mechanical. Even with something with a much more similar premise, like Please Save My Earth, the focus is much more on this kind of almost petty shoujo style drama, and it never really conveys the "sense of significance" that SM does.
It feels bizarre how this thing is somehow tied with such a lame and repetitive MotW format that is at odds with both the subject matter and its scope, even if it greatly succeeds at doing far better than 'just' being such a show.
Sailor Moon fighting games and beat em ups are inaccurate because these girls never threw a fucking punch.
>>1186707290s anime magic. Sailor Moon was made with actual shinto magic (see: sailor mars) the same kind of kinomagic that was applied with Urusei Yatsura a decade earlier.
>>11867081That's why it's fun that the games lets you do it with them.
>>11867072Yeah the first season especially is excellent
>>11867072DESU any show that runs for 4 years or so is going to feel "epic"
You underestimate the MotW format. I really believe some of the greatest stories in japanese TV are in the sunday morning all-year-long blocks
>>11867115>DESU any show that runs for 4 years or so is going to feel "epic"That isn't quite what I'm alluding to. Like, Dragon Ball is even longer and escalates in scope at least as much, but it definitely lacks the same kind of character. Like, the way Sailor Moon builds up the characters and their connection to the world around them and has their ultimate actions play into various themes is something you don't see in DB to close to the same degree, Dragon Ball builds things up over time into final finishing episodes, but usually the focus is just on having the characters become more powerful to tackle whatever enemy they're facing, and not on exploring their worldviews and motivations and conflicts between them in any more significant way.
Like, watching Sailor Moon, there are scenes where a character might transgress against another's moral values in a really impactful way, and it's often handled with considerable thought put into how the scenes are portrayed. You really end up feeling this stuff because of how well directed it is.
I booted up and beat the SNES beat em up the other day for no reason. Never played it before.
I "like" how bosses randomly have invincibility windows with no indicators. Either that or the hitboxes randomly apply. I assume the former?
>>11867170IMO it's different ways to handle it.
DB is more macho so there's less words and personal drama and more action, but there definitely are certain key moments that give the story, characters and the world in which they exist a great sense of genuine substance. Or maybe it's just being clever with the direction (both on manga or anime) and how certain scenes and setpieces can become iconic and connect with people on an emotional level.
>>11866836>>11867176The arcade game is a step above those two in everything, graphics, music, number of on screen enemies, though it is much more difficult, you got to set the difficulty to lowest if you want a console like experience. Definitely worth a play.

>>11867193That's a bit more than a step up in graphics.
>>11867170I wouldn't compare it to DBZ because they're different genres. Shounen fighting manga is about the fights.
This all really boils down to people assuming a genre like magical girls, which is perceived as something for little girls, is going to be simple and childish and have aesops and stuff and then it turns out to have some really well thought out stories and characters and shit that stays in your heart.
if you like this shit you are 100% a faggot
>>11866827 (OP)Is dragonmoonx still a website? I jacked off so much to that!
>>11867227Not really. Any time a Sailor throws a punch or kick is very, very rare. Their style is spellcasting from a distance first and foremost.

Sailor Moon and Ranma 1/2 were the original trans-gateway anime. Seriously, I'd bet that the majority of Gen X and Millennial trannies were fans of one or both of these shows prior to transitioning.

Sailor Moon R is ok, some bullshit enemies (like those slime girls that can grab you whenever the fuck they feel like it), but it's nothing terrible. Chain throwing bosses is fun.
The Genesis one sounds good, but like you said, it's pretty "mid" otherwise.

Who is the most solid of the Pretty Soliders?
>>11866827 (OP)>>11867072Liked Another Story, the SNES RPG. It's probably the only game I would recommend in this franchise.
And yes the 90s show goes hard, highly recommend both for people who already like their magical girls, or want to get into them.
>>11867092R too, even better overall even if gets a weaker ending.
>>11867001>Kind of hated the main character though, I thought she was actually too whiny and stupid.Usagi's retardation and how various characters react to it is why the show is so good, among other things.
>>11873351or just play ToP and star ocean
>>11867072Watching the series now with my kids, I watched it back when I was a kid and it was on TV but I only remember certain moments and episodes. We are a few episodes past the Ail and An arc and I'm finding it super enjoyable. The show is legitimately funny.
One strange thing I noticed, R starts with really high quality animation for the Ail and An episodes. But right after that the animation quality drops back to season 1 levels. It's not bad but it went from looking like a movie or high quality OVA back to regular TV levels. We are watching the recent Blu-ray release.
Speaking of the recent Blu-ray release, really liking the new dub outside of Chibiusas voice. Way too adult voicing a kids voice sounding to me.
>>11873390what? Sandy Fox sounds more like a little kid than Kae Araki does. Kae Araki only got the job as consolation after her gig as Kotono Mitsuishi's stand-in was over.
>>11873396Gonna be honest, I don't know who any of these people are by name. Just find her new voice grating, but my kids also consume a lot of media with grown women doing little kids voices.
I'm also struggling to remember the real names vs the original DiC names. I'll never retain Molly's and Malvin's real names.
>>11873401Mitsuishi is Moon's VA. towards the end of S1 she had to go into rehab for surgery and couldn't do voice work, so Toei brought in Araki as a voice double. when Mitsubishi came back, Araki lost the role. when Chibiusa got introduced, they brought Araki back to voice her.
>>11873415Is this the DiC or Viz dub? Because watching the Viz dub I can't tell anyone who changed from last season
>>11873509Nah, watching the recent Blu-rays. I do have a few DiC Sailor Moon VHSs kicking around as well
>>11873542Never gonna remember that
>>11873390Chiba Usa's second voice actress (after dic) sounded just like a real kid. Rare anyone can get that accurate
>>11873603As someone who has a daughter more or less the same age as Chibi Usa, no she doesn't sound like a real kid.
Also, when I first saw Rini's real name was Chibi Usa, I thought it was Chibi USA as in Chibi America and never made the connection until watching this new dub
>>11873613Chibiusa is such a dumb name
and dumb character
with a dumb season
God why.
>>11873635The way the show explains it I kinda like it. Still early in her episodes but so far she's been funny, especially when she pulled that 1911 on Serena
>>11873642Supposedly her actual name is just Usagi, although they call her smol lady instead.
>>11873648Yeah, they explained this in the show. Both of them are named Usagi, Sailor Moon called her Chibi Usa as a cut but then Daren said he thought it was cute so it stuck.
My 8 year old daughter understood this on the first watch, why are you repeating it like it's some arcane knowledge
>>11871741>Guardian is too mild. And Usagi and her friends are the farthest things from actual soldiers.
>>11873419it's the original Japanese dub. does Kotono Mitsuishi sound like an apple pie name to you?
>>11873785they're reincarnations is why. their original Moon Kingdom versions were far more professional.
>>11873972Sorry about that, meant to say I only do dubs
>>11867072>It still amazes me how much more massively 'epic' Sailor Moon feels compared to every other animelol. lmao. holy shit, retards really watch 1 (one) magical girl show and just go
>"EPIC"without a shred of fucking irony.
Sailor Slop Moon does fuck all except waste your time and drag on with boring shit. Even the most basic bitch Pretty Cure season gets more shit done in less time because it has to due to the self-imposed constraints of the format. Yes, I am saying that objectively, even a slop season like Suite or Happiness Charge is superior to the whole Sailor Moon series.
It's a shame the Pretty Cure games are almost exclusively garbage though.
>>11875460NTA, but as somebody who was casually exposed to many MG series(including Precures) as a young lad back when I had no interest in it, I made a conscious choice to fully watch the one I remembered to be more engaging many years later. And yes it's Sailor Moon.
>>11875460it's pasta, I've seen it a dozen times on /a/
>>11875534He isn't wrong though. SM defined "epic" in the MG genre, before that it wasn't even a thing, and after that you got all these inferior attempts at replicating the same feeling like precures.
>>11873648>>11873635>>11873656Chibiusa is the least stupid thing when you realise people name their children after themselves. It's like Homer Junior, and the kids could call him HoJu.
>>11875539But she is called Usagi like her mother.
>>11875542Usagi 2 or Usagi Jr. is awkward is my point.
>>11875546For me it's the part where apparently everyone in Crystal Tokyo including her parents and Pluto called her "small lady" instead.
>>11875542the implication is that Usagi is childish and uncreative.
Also, the way the Sailor Moon powers work is that each successive generation is basically a reincarnation of the previous, so Chibiusa is functionally a clone of Usagi, and when she was born Future Usagi lost her ability to transform because the silver crystal transferred to Chibiusa's spirit
>>11875552>spoilerThey should have used that premise to set up for a "Chibiusa grows up and becomes the new Sailor Moon" sequel/spinoff, although the way the plot works doesn't really allow for this to make any sense without further contrivances.
>>11875571there are a few side stories the mangaka wrote after SM ended that are basically her running her own sailor team, but they're not canon and only one-shots.
>>11875589>basically her running her own sailor teamKinda cool. I need to check them.
>>11875589How are they not canon if she created it?
>>11875592because they're explicitly 'what if' stories. Takeuchi had a habit of creating silly side stories just for the fun of it.
>>11875571So a new shaman king flower, Saintia Shล and half-demon princess?
Play Another Story.
And read up about formations if you are getting steamrolled. You also have 2 very broken abilities.
>>11867573you're really gonna diss my boi Jupiter like that
>>11867573Blasphemy. Jupiter works her hardest to be the most perfect wife for the perfect boyfriend. She doesn't live like a slob.
>>11873953not the snes version of the beat em up, dipshit, the fighting games
>>11867072It's one of the few anime that consistently makes me laugh, which is pretty amazing because there's no stereotypical cringe Asian "humor" bringing it down. It truly feels unique.
