Well, the greater evil should be visible to everyone at this point. I don't blame Valve neither, especially since they treated the devs of the banned games with respect instead of just scrubbing and banning them. That's the real indication they didn't want to do it but it's a matter of their hands being tied. I don't think it's over neither.
They most likely got pushed around by CC companies screeching "delete it now or else" and didn't have the tools or means to combat it. You can't really swap your entire payment options on the fly to something else. And it wouldn't be the first time Valve awaits public opinion before making their next 3D chess move. Since it involves porn, especially so.

Organic/contextual diversity =/= forced diversity to push an agenda. Alyx, CJ, whoever the fuck else wasn't there to girlboss or push BLM / woke narratives.
Honestly, I really like a diverse cast of characters with their cultural differences. GTA San Andreas and Half-life nailed that shit. Alyx is a masterclass on a powerful female character. She holds her own, both in story and gameplay yet has her moments where she breaks down and shows weakness. San Andreas tackles racism from different angles but with nuance and it never is preached to the player. They also introduce various races and culture into the mix which all feels contextually right.
