I believe he wasn't used to the best of his potential, this guy if used properly can be the best chaotic neutral force in comics.
in the hands of a proper writter he would have been the rare example of a force that needs both villains and heroes working together to defeat, and since he made it personal with mary jane then spidey would have a valid reason to kill him.
