Paul was a great character, because he was an antagonist Spider-Man couldn't punch, and an adult problem Peter Parker couldn't solve, just a good regular vaguely ethnic single father dude railing his ex-wife. Spider-Man needs non super powered foes, in the past he had Flash, and JJJ, Paul was a prick, flaunting everything Peter wanted in his and the readers face, a perfect villain.
The problem is they started adding supervillain bullshit on top of his character, he's from another universe, the kids aren't real, he gives MJ powers, he's her tech guy, ect, and to make matters worst they're going in a direction when it's going to Mary Jane or Dylan Brock are going to be the ones who kicks his ass and not Peter when the Paul heel turn comes, so it's really just wasted character building, cause the reader is going to get the moment they want of Peter going over Paul in a satisfying way.

First, Peter has had plenty of problems he couldn't Spider-Man his way out of. One of the major themes of Spider-Man was that Peter's life as Spider-Man hindered or outright fucked up his chances at a normal or even successful life. He's lost opportunities and relationships because of it, even if they knew he is Spider-Man. The major moments of tragedy in his life happen because he was Spider-Man and couldn't Spider-Man his way out of it.

And a woman who's been a huge part of your life for years cutting you off because she got stuck in an alternate dimension and got married and had kids is not "adult." That time dilation nonsense was for the sake of the plot because the writer did not know how to actually write MJ and Peter in a way that fit their characters or be true to if or why they would drift apart after everything they've been through as friends and as a couple. Everything that happened was in service to a lazy plot and Marvel Mandate that ignores near 30 years of character growth to keep Peter in a state of arrested development.

I'm saying that they're meaningless because they're nothing more than corporate mandates and creative rot because Peter can't actually grow as a character again and they have to slash and gut the last 30 years to do it. All to bleed dry the last remaining collectors and speculators that bother to finish the run.

Meanwhile, people don't have to open a comic to see married Peter because a version of Peter has been dating or married to a version MJ in nearly every iteration of Spider-Man outside of comics for decades. Movies, video games, cartoons, and so on. The only version of Peter that was not with MJ was the Andrew Garfield version and Marvel Rivals, and I still expect those companies to pull that trigger if they decide to put him in another Spider Man movie.

Even then, the plot was still poorly thought out and just another gimmick in a sea of bad gimmicks because Marvel wants to keep shelf dominance and has enough money to ignore sales and just keep pumping books out.

Paul isn't really a character, he's a contrivance to drive a wedge between Peter and MJ solely because editorial doesn't want a healthy dynamic between them. And it's not even really just an MJ thing, Marvel simply can't write Peter even semi-functional as an adult. To them relationship issues are an easy source of narrative drama they can milk but ultimately doesn't do anything for the reader in terms of interesting storytelling. In the case of Paul, he's a physical representation of editorial's laziness and creative bankruptcy. He began as a mystery box, a question of "Who is this guy, and why is he with Mary Jane? Why do they have kids?". But the mystery in question wasn't entertaining to fans, and the reveals that followed didn't alleviate criticisms. So that all was dealt with, so Paul simply just....exists. Nearly everything we learn about the guy is unlikable, and he's become sort of pathetic where its not even worth laughing about. It's a step further than Carlie Cooper, who was a complete waste of time yet wasn't offensive like how Paul was executed.

it honestly should've happened already. one more day is almost 20 years old at this point and a kid who picked up spider-man at BND and grew up on that would be in their mid-late 20s or turning 30 by now.

i think what keeps it from happening is there are enough people internally at marvel who want the marriage back (editorial be damned) that we occasionally get stuff like renew your vows or nu-USM keeping it relevant.

I think what I miss is the sense that, even though Peter has seen loss after loss, something in him or the people around him kept him moving forward. He did not seem like a loser or someone defined by his losses. Harmed by them, changed by them, but not defined by them to the point where that was all he had.

And now he has to be a perpetual loser and he can't really fight from underneath and find a real win. Because that would mean some semblance of change and growth and learning, and its easier to do shallow melodrama where nothing really happens. Where punching the bad guy at the end of the latest round of torture is the win rather than Peter actually improving his life in any meaningful way. Or having a cast of characters that he can really interact and grow with, whether as friends or as lovers or even as family. He has to fail.

There's something to be said about how every panel he's in involves him making the smuggest douchiest face imaginable in his earliest appearances. I guess "shipping" is a part of it, but more than anything it's the lack of contribution to the story but the need to constantly force him into it. Especially after the "kids" died, he and MJ could have disappeared into the background for a while. Yet he's still on panel all the time, still in stories.

There's well regarded members of Peter's cast that have appeared in movies and runs throughout the years that get less panel time than him. Hell, there's powered heroes people like that get less panel time than him.
