Pop culture is very trend driven. When I was a child, I heard about Edison all the time but the only reason why I knew Tesla existed was because there was a statue of him hidden in a shady corner of the park next to the American side of Niagara Falls.
Tesla was not a household name. He was mostly forgotten by everyone except those who worked in electronics fields that used the Tesla unit of measure. Today he is worshiped by pop culture, while Edison's image has suffered dramatically.

Having a larger than life personality does help sell the public on a pop culture figure but there still needs to be something there at the core.
