What I think is so chilling about Metamorphosis is that Gregor’s family is so recognizable, so normal. They are not rich, but they are not wanting either. They are not at war with each other, just generally amicable and getting along. They are to outward appearances a completely normal family, and after Gregor dies they just act like a normal family again.
Dogrector really skipped a beat when writing canto 1 putting zero emphasis on Gregor's familial matters, which is the entire fucking point. And the book is only about 100 pages long too, so how the hell did he fuck that up.
