you have many months or even a year+ between the first time you show up at the conscription office for paperwork+medical check (often while you're in highschool still) and when you're called to go to bootcamp. in the meantime you're considered a 'defense service candidate' and it's sort of a chaotic and very obscure system where you can literally call/mail/contact army units and ask to go get tested for selection to those, and if you dont get selected and 'pulled out' of the default route you get assigned something automatically (but they ask you to rank preferences and usually people get one of their top ones)
anyways i wasnt selected for the airforce but did pass selection to another unit and dropped out because of illness/injury during bootcamp. i wont say where i ended up for privacy's sake but its a vary chaotic process in the idf no two soldiers have the same story of how they got where they got
