The comic relief characters in TV shows were never effective on me, but I always adored them in animated movies. The raccoon/pug sub-plot in Pocahontas, the gargoyles in Hunchback, Mushu in Mulan, Timon & Pumbaa so much that I watched the TV show and played some PC game back in the day.

I don't know why TV comic relief was ass but they worked in movies. Better pacing?
