Well 2's ending left it ambiguous as to whether either of them remembered being Roxas and Namine. It was the subsequent games that settled on Roxas' memories being locked away so Sora couldn't remember them. I think part of the reason they avoided that was because they didn't want to write Sora with that baggage. Although KH2 already made Sora angrier which I thought was a side-effect of Roxas returning to him. But that didn't carry over to other games because he accepted his fate and went to sleep inside him again once he reunited with Namine I guess. I think they try to avoid changing Sora's character too drastically. Like there's that one concept art of Roxas where he's identical to Sora, which I actually believe was going to be Sora without his memories as a Nobody rather than Sora and Roxas being more like separate entities.

It'd be interesting in KH4 if Sora does pick up some more of his Roxas-isms again. He seems more serious in the trailers and images so far, we'll see how much that sticks. It'd help hammer home that Roxas was the other side of Sora and they aren't the polar opposites people think. I've always thought that Roxas is what was within Sora, not so much his darkness but an alternate version of him had his life been tougher.
