It's shilled because with the OnionOS CFW, it's really easy to just pick up and play with and RetroArch integration is seamless, and there's lots of room for customization and apps but in a pretty idiot-proof environment. It was revolutionary for the time as >>11850781 said, but there are alternatives on the market nowadays. Still, many people still swear by it, and it'd be disingenuous to say it isn't one of the nicest OSes in the handheld community. If you take away the OS though, it's the same junk that the RG35XX or PowKiddy or whatever other vertical slab is at stock settings, though it does have nicer buttons at least.
The only other good option in that vertical form factor and price range is the TrimUI Smart Brick. If anything, the Brick is superior because it has Bluetooth, a GPU to add some N64 and Dreamcast games to your library (even if most games are a pain in the ass to use the d-pad as an analog stick), programmable buttons, and the screen is a lot nicer. Some people don't like the buttons, especially the shoulders, and there's a meme about it getting hot under stress, but it's not like it reaches fingerprint eraser temps and is only noticeable on more demanding libraries like PS1 and N64.
Both of these devices are around $40-$50 on AliExpress. If you want to get the Miyoo, I'd get the Miyoo Mini Plus specifically, the Mini V4 is just a novelty at its size and has worse specs like no WiFi for OTA and RetroAchievements if you care about that, and the volume wheel and old triggers fucking suck to use. Some people do like that it's small enough to literally play with one hand, which might be nice for turn-based RPGs or something, but it's kind of a niche use case. They use the exact same OnionOS CFW and do almost all the same stuff though. Only reason to get the V4 is if you're really curious about the device that started it all and want to be mildly amused playing Gran Turismo on a screen smaller than a Post-it note for 10 minutes.
