Powkiddy v90s, all it needs is good CFW and that's it. Its cheap, it plays RETRO GAMES and you can throw it in a pocket/bag whatever and not have to worry about it.

The Revo K101 Plus. I've got the one that's colored like the original GBA. I like having a cheap enough GBA clone that I can run my Everdrive on since I like carts, and it's pretty comfy to use. I haven't used the video out but it's cool to have, and the included flash cart's alright. My only problem is that the d-pad isn't that great, but for Pokemon hacks it's not that bad.

the best in terms of look and feel would be the rg300x.
it feels solid and the slight angle of the buttons is excellent. shoulder buttons are very easy to access and press too, though they are too clicky. the lack of analogs is a feature.
i would love it more if it had a rk3326 for a little extra power for better performance and shader support.

This, a generous as fuck return policy and 24-48 hour shipping is essential when experimenting with chink crap and worth the 10-20% upcharge imo. It's for that reason I ordered 5 devices by Anbernic and Miyoo and tested them to see which ones I actually liked enough to keep, then returned 3 of them. Then a few weeks later I noticed one I kept had a screen coming loose from a shitty glue job or whatever, so I exchanged it for another one. They even let me receive the replacement first before having me send back the old one.
I'm sure you could do this with AliExpress but you'd have to put up with both Chinese japery and possibly waiting the better half of a month to get/return shit. I've heard companies would rather just send you free parts to fix the model yourself rather than just swap it out for a new one.

I have an Android 'held which runs JoiPlay breddy decently, but I was looking for stuff that can run (via ERPG) on the TSP as well.
It's been oddly difficult to find info about r2k/r2k3 eroge, not least because a lot of sites only list "RPGM" as the engine, without differentiating between generations.

You can use twilight menu/patcher on 3ds to apply new filters, as well as widescreen hacks. If the game is 3d, it actually renders the extra screen width, it's not just stretched.
if you go through the trouble, the analog stick hacks are also very good.

Here's a comparison of a dsi xl(the largest screened way to play pixel perfect nds) vs new 3ds xl

Valve will only release a new Steam Deck once the new UDNA iGPUs can be sourced at a low enough cost.
Their intention is to be the reference baseline for x86 handhelds, not duke it out with the likes of Asus, Lenovo, or MSI. They also need a chip that can go as low as 7-8 W TDP, which no current AMD design can do.

OTOH, I would only buy the OLED version of the Deck, and only 2nd hand or refurb.

Reddit "likes it" because Tiktok spammed ads for it and they got fomo. It actually sold like shit on Tiktok, but Reddit ate it up until it became a coveted must have device. Similar to the Nintendo Amiibo, Redditors started posting, "I got mine!" threads further increasing their incestuous self-created fomo over it.
Reddit's obsession with the Miyoo Mini created an entire fucking market around Redditors buying them, especially on Etsy with making accessories and custom buttons.
Then the Miyoo Mini Plus came out, and Reddit felt like they had to have a console war with Anbernic over it.

It's not that A-Data SSDs were shit, some of their generations were very price/performance competitive. It's that they were notorious, IIRC during the mid-2010s, for pulling bait&switch shit with their SSD controllers. They would release one batch of high-performance SSDs (which would get all the reviews), then they would switch to a cheaper, lower-performance controller chip for their next batch. They eventually stopped this BS, after several reviewers did 1st to 2nd batch comparisons.

That capacity might be overkill in some instances, depending on what your device's performance. If your 'held can only run platforms up to PS1 (your typical A-53/55 quad-core), 256 GB should be enough, even when adding Portmaster stuff into the mix. If your device can run up to Saturn (ex. T820-based 'helds), you'll likely want 512 GB (some PSP games are over 1 GB in size, plus the DC/Saturn/PS1 titles). In general, you shouldn't buy cards that can hold way more than you realistically need for a particular handheld. They're not very expensive, but the costs eventually add up, if you happen to have more than 1 'held.

Just get a proper branded one off of Amazon or your local stores if you're worried about knockoffs. 128GB is more than enough for up to PS1 and most of it will be filled up with PS1. Anything below PS1 is so small in size that GBA will have the largest files outside of it in 32 MB ones at max.
If you want to go past PS1 then 512GB is the best middleground if you want a little bit of everything.

i don't find translucent "distracting" as much as it just doesn't fit the decor in my home, which is generally solid black. the sticks are probably positioned in a way that sucks, but i've played on controllers in my day that had equal or worse ergonomics, probably, and i was fine. i remember a handful of aftermarket controllers that were shaped a fair bit different from their OEM counterparts. and ultimately a 34 is smaller, i appreciate that portability. the dimensions of the overall unit are near identical to the actual GBA SP compared to the 35 which is noticeably larger.

Dedicated device with its own storage, no bloat on phone or unnecessary drain on battery (remember that, unlikely as it is, a cellphone is usually your one and only way to contact emergency services should something happen)
Proper controls, ergonomics, screen, emulator developer support, etc.

Plus in a few years phones will be even more locked down than they already are and you'll bet google and apple will forbid use of emulators on their stuff because of "safety concerns"

Your in luck then. Telescopic controllers didn't have clicky dpads in the pass. Easysmx m15 is a good cheaper option. The kishi ultra is said to have a great clicky dpad for fighting games, but its overpriced. The gamesir g8 is also said to have a clicky dpad, but I'm not sure if it's the original or the plus model. One of them also has a problem with multipress if one of the sides is pushed too hard.

How customizable are the fast forward features on these devices? I've been looking at the Anbernic 35/34 SP, but haven't found much information on if you can remap and increase the speed. Menu + R2 seems tedious for a feature I plan on using frequently. I'd prefer holding one of the shoulder buttons to skip through animations. I tried playing Pokemon TCG on my 3DS and it's a slog waiting for coin flips and enemy turns at 100% speed.

It can indeed be remapped in the RA, but looking through options I don't see an option to use FF without a toggle hotkey. But you can map toggle and FF to the same button and it works.

Because RA design is fucking retarded, the only way to have FF bound to a single button -while also- retaining hotkey + button functionality for everything else is if the core has its own FF functionality, which Gambatte (GB) and gpSP (GBA) do. That said, helps if you switch the RA-wide FF from hold to toggle (and I have no idea why that isn't standard on any OS).

I see. The most I was hoping for was Pokemon Stadium and maybe Mario Party mini games, but those were just bonuses to the main GBC use. I was considering Digimon World a play on it as well. Are they sticks good enough for that? Or should I just say fuck it and do the 35SP?

IPS lottery is a meme. You can just adjust the color warmth and brightness in Rosalina menu to fix 90% of the issues with the TN screens. Only other problem is the viewing angles, which means nothing because you don't play your 3DS while pointing the screen to the side. If you're really committed to putting extra money into a marginally better display, you might as well just get a OLED emulation handheld or Steam Deck, because those will always look better than even an IPS screen 3DS. Or, since you mentioned normal DS games, the DSi XL is guaranteed to have IPS screens and is a lot cheaper than the 3DS.

the stylus is the problem.
capacitive touch screens (the ones that only react to fingers or special stylus) are generally less precise than resistive touch screens (the ones that react to anything).
i don't expect retroid to be the exception, especially because they don't come with any stylus.
if you must emulate, i would recommend a fancy phone with built-in stylus, those are precise enough.

They "improved" it in V2 but it still kept happening. They apparently stated that the hinge problem was a bad batch of plastic specifically for the gray SNES color scheme models that had a high hinge failure rate, which sucks because that's probably the most popular color for it lol. I don't think it was widely reported for any other color.
I got the hwhite Dreamcast knockoff model personally, already have enough SNES nostalgia shit anyways.

For me it's mostly PS1 JRPGS. I had been thinking of buying a steam deck but with it being old I was warned off it, and some people suggested streaming from my PC. I've never done that before so I'm only now looking into handhelds that could handle it.

34SP owner here, I wouldn't count on it for N64 and the sticks are regular ministicks, not sliders like 3DS. However, they're faaaar from useless with the stuff it can run through Portmaster. I'm particularly enjoying Descent 2, the Perfect Dark source port, and Raptor: Call of the Shadows right now and I've got Half-Life running on there too. The CFW scene for it is still a bit underbaked but alpha/nightly builds for Knulli and Rocknix support it so whenever the next stable releases drop it shouldn't be an issue. I'm really enjoying it, great little device.

The original launch DS has the best ergonomics out of any DS/2DS/3DS model. Its only flaw is its absolutely retarded Power button placement, literally the only thing the DSlite model fixed (No, the brighter screens were not better. The first ones turn smoke yellow in a year, second and third ones have DISGUSTING ghosting that makes any sprite DS title/GBA game look like smeared grease, only the fourth gen DSlite screens are an improvement over the dimmer phat DS ones.
God fucking damn I will forever hate Nintendo for patenting the DS's d-pad design, the single greatest d-pad ever fucking made, and then shelves it for the Apple aesthetics of the + d-pad.
The ultimate GBA machine with official hardware is the bottom half of an original Nintendo DS with a new screen and speakers installed on the bottom, and costs less than $70 to do ($40-50 for a phat DS, $20 for the screen).

I want to play my retro ps1 games as well as the low end jrpgs that I buy on steam. And it's not that it being old makes it unable to play old games, it's just value for dollar isn't there as much because it's older hardware. At least that's what I've been told previously.

Value for dollar? Are you buying a gaming device -- essentially throwing your money away -- or investing? It's a good device for what you want. It can play PS1 no problem. PS2. PS3, some at least -- I finished Ratchet and Clank HD trilogy on the deck. PC JRPGs.
Yes, the new Deck might come out soon. Yes, new handhelds with Z2 Extreme are more powerful (while being much more expensive). None of these things will take away your ability to play some FF7 (I know it's what everyone plays on these things) on the OG, or better yet, OLED Deck. Even if it's not perfectly optimized for value.

Deck is overkill, doesn't matter how "old" the hardware might be. It doesn't lose strength over time just because it's older hardware, it stays the same. The deck can handle anything up to and including the Switch, but people report problems with PS3. If you're just playing JRPGs, they "might" be able to work fine.

If I were you, I would care about two things: display and controls. Get the best display and controls you can afford and be done with it, never come back to this thread ever again because it's 99% cheap chink shit and buying whatever they crap out over and over.

It's shilled because with the OnionOS CFW, it's really easy to just pick up and play with and RetroArch integration is seamless, and there's lots of room for customization and apps but in a pretty idiot-proof environment. It was revolutionary for the time as >>11850781 said, but there are alternatives on the market nowadays. Still, many people still swear by it, and it'd be disingenuous to say it isn't one of the nicest OSes in the handheld community. If you take away the OS though, it's the same junk that the RG35XX or PowKiddy or whatever other vertical slab is at stock settings, though it does have nicer buttons at least.
The only other good option in that vertical form factor and price range is the TrimUI Smart Brick. If anything, the Brick is superior because it has Bluetooth, a GPU to add some N64 and Dreamcast games to your library (even if most games are a pain in the ass to use the d-pad as an analog stick), programmable buttons, and the screen is a lot nicer. Some people don't like the buttons, especially the shoulders, and there's a meme about it getting hot under stress, but it's not like it reaches fingerprint eraser temps and is only noticeable on more demanding libraries like PS1 and N64.
Both of these devices are around $40-$50 on AliExpress. If you want to get the Miyoo, I'd get the Miyoo Mini Plus specifically, the Mini V4 is just a novelty at its size and has worse specs like no WiFi for OTA and RetroAchievements if you care about that, and the volume wheel and old triggers fucking suck to use. Some people do like that it's small enough to literally play with one hand, which might be nice for turn-based RPGs or something, but it's kind of a niche use case. They use the exact same OnionOS CFW and do almost all the same stuff though. Only reason to get the V4 is if you're really curious about the device that started it all and want to be mildly amused playing Gran Turismo on a screen smaller than a Post-it note for 10 minutes.

Yeah. Plus you can have different tastes for different experiences. I don't usually care about "accuracy" much but when I play CV2 I like to give it a more jittery, RF switch-like look that I remember from back in the day. I think the key thing (for me) is using shaders less to make it a supposedly accurate reproduction of specific hardware, and just as an aesthetic layer to trigger the emotional feels I associate with the game. An artist's interpretation, if you will.

I'd ditch muOS for Rocknix in a heartbeat, but losing the proprietary GPU blobs really sucks for 3D ports and the few select PSP I play, might end up sucking it up anyway once I run into GBA games with crackling.

I bought a Miyoo Mini Plus out of curiosity, when onionOs was still a noteworthy feature. The device can handle up to PSX games (anything beyond that likely requires analog sticks, I guess).
I know there are better options out there, such as the Trimui Brick with its higher res screen, or other devices with a horizontal form factor that might be more comfortable for extended play sessions. However, to be honest, I donโ€™t need anything more right now.
In the future, I might consider upgrading to something more powerful for playing PS2 or N64 games, but Iโ€™m not sure how much the addition of analog sticks would affect portability. Until then, Iโ€™m using a telescopic pad with my phone.

Need to specify I had both a PSP-1000 launch, and the red God fo War PSP-2000 which was LAUGHABLY shittier and cheaper quality, I'e had fucking 500-in-1 famiclones in PSP shapes with better plastic quality than the PSP-2000.

I never owned a PSP Go or PSP-3000, they did seem neat but so fucking redundant at the time, especially with how unhappy I was with how shitty the 1000 and ESPECIALLY the 2000 were.
The PSP-2000 was so fucking terrible I'm surprised I even got a Vita at all.

Even though the 3000 looks nicer than the 2000, it's apparently super shittier. If you want a PSP, at all, the og 1000 model or maybe a Go if you can handle it are the way to go.
Fuck a PSP TV, you might as well play on a Vita for a better experience.

TrimUI has better hardware like a better screen, programmable buttons, and has a GPU that allows it to handle some N64 and PSP games, but Miyoo has a more mature device with better community support behind it and really good CFW. Other than that, it comes down to preference of the actual build. Some people think the MM+ has the best d-pad and buttons in the <$100 range, or that the TrimUI has bad shoulder button options. Do you want something with a nostalgiabait Game Boy plastic build, or do you want something more modern and kind of aping the Analogue Pocket design, even with a full-metal variant dropping in a few weeks? They're both around the same price, so just decide which is more important for you. Or buy both.

2000 is the best all-around model.
1000 has a joke of a screen, and suffers with homebrew that use the 2k/3k's added RAM. And I personally hate my Go. Bought it to play games at work and it sucks to use. Same deal with my GB Micro, actually.
3000 would be ideal if hacking it wasn't a minefield.
