The presence of small kids surely complicates things. They make frequent messes and require constant supervision. And if you're a good homemaker, you want to personally educate them in the early years, so they aren't clueless when they do eventually begin attending school.
But I also imagine such things are very fulfilling to do. Better than holding a job, that's for certain.
