For me, what makes it work is that he is extremely sincere about what he is about and the games roll with both the good and the bad aspects about him. A lot of people in the games often talk shit about him (and for a damn good reason most of the time), but when shit hits the fan, he's one of the most reliable people in the entire setting because he actually gets shit done regardless of whatever and whomever he's up against and doesn't compromise like a regular moralfag would have in the face of a morally ambiguous situation.
