Nintendo never said it was bad design. There were 2 Zelda games in the 80s, one was entirely open world and the other was a quasi-open-world platformer.

Every Metroid is open except for Fusion (the worst one Other M and Fettucine Force don't exist). You can do every boss in Super in any order you want except for having to kill Mother Brain last for obvious reasons.

Mario Kart is the only one it doesn't work for and that's only because highways are genuinely boring. Other games have tried the open world racing shit before and they all sucked too. World still had really good track designs but you never get to play them anymore.
