I never played with any meta skill and I always play SSFHC, my experience is more that a lot of the "kits" feel incomplete.
I usually play witch and do bone or curse/chaos build, bone is somewhat fun and good but is CLEARLY missing a good AoE skill. Corpse detonation doesn't really feel like a "bone" spell and having to kill someone before being able to use it sucks.
Chaos was really fun until they randomly decided to fuck over hexblast for no reason, hexblast required lots of setup and investment to even work, and it wasn't even that OP. Yet they decided to totally butcher the skill.
And gear impacts your damage and how easy the game is more than everything else, if you're lucky and find a neck with extra levels on skills or a good wand and offhand with that, it can more than triple your damage. So more than anything else you need to rely on your luck.

Even the weakest skill can feel good if you're lucky enough with drops, and even the most OP skill can feel shitty if you're unlucky.
