He still views himself as a centrist and he still views himself as some kind of everyman who embodies a consensus of public thought (a bit like how Rousseau's monarch embodies the "general will") rather than a polarizing weirdo that nobody actually likes.
When the consequences of DOGE hit home over the next decade his name will be mud. From a publication relations standpoint its a good idea to distances himself from Trump's Bill as its going to turn America into a hyper-violent and stratified society much like 90's Brazil.
