Toriel and Asgore baby Kris way too much. I think that's one of the core plot points of the game. Toriel does things like that, and speaks to him like he's still a little kid, while Asgore doesn't step up with the kind of direct, grown-up guidance he's needed especially since he became a teenager. They don't even notice (or worse, they do and ignore) how much Kris is struggling, especially with Asriel away, with how emotionally distant and isolated he has become. I think he wants to be seen as the young adult he is. I think he resents the way he's treated so he's trying to isolate himself from it, he wants to be treated like the young adult he is, but since he isn't treated that way, he has no idea what to do with adult responsibilities and privileges. And that's why he's lashing out at night in secret. I think this whole plot point is why the Spamton side quest in the feels so deeply personal for Kris. Spamton is unhinged and unsettling, sure, but he's the first character to actually treat Kris like a man, like he has real agency, Spamton speaks to him as an equal with choices that matter. He's not babysitting Kris or trying to control him like most of the cast is. He demand Kris act, but not obey. Kris also sees a reflection of his own struggle for freedom and self-actualization in Spamton's desperate fight to break free from control. That's why the encounter shakes Kris so deeply. It left him rattled, but I think it left him a little wiser, a little bit more open (thanks to Susie being there for him), and a little bit more mature. Still mostly screwed up though, he can't really start to recover until his parents in the light world start treating him like a man and start caring about his issues. But since he's in a broken home and his parents are mostly focused on themselves, I don't see that happening.
