>It’s true that in many conversations, Phyre’s reputation as The Nomad precedes them. They only go by Phyre in the first place because the first thing they see after waking up is a poster for a band with the same name. In the original Bloodlines, you play as a vampire right when they turn, so The Nomad’s status as an elder vampire is a new direction for the series, and this social identity is a prime example of it. The Elder status is also emphasized by her relationship to Fabien, who is much younger and enthusiastic by comparison.
>“It actually took us quite a bit of time to land that,” Thomas says of Fabien’s personality. “There was always a character in Phyre’s head. The character mutated as the story changed.” Thomas goes on to explain that early versions of Fabien were too similar to Phyre, which made their relationship uninteresting. Eventually, it clicked that Fabien should be a Malkavian, a psychic clan of vampires others consider deranged, which explains why his voice was in Phyre’s head.
>While early versions had him as a “jaded, Chinatown-style detective,” Thomas says the character clicked once they realized “Fabian is delighted in the world. He finds the world fascinating. He’s that one detective who had a conspiracy theory that there’s vampires and things in the world, and he was proved right.” Fabien also talks exactly like the cheesiest version of a noir detective – think Spider-Man Noir from Into the Spider-Verse – which balances Phyre’s dry, to-the-point style of conversation they picked up when they were turned 400 years ago. It adds a sense of lighthearted humor to a game that is otherwise dark and serious.
