I personally prefer the 3rd/4th edition way of doing Codecies, where you had one main codex for a faction, and then you could add supplements either to specific factions, or multiple as part of a setting / campaign.

mydudes are Black Legion, with veterans of the Heresy displaying the old Sons of Horus colors on one pauldron and/or other parts of their armor that have yet survived. They also sometimes have individual markings personal to them. But mostly this is because I wanted ways to break up what would otherwise be a sea of black & gold/metal, and I take influences from the 2e & 3e chaos marines with things like yellow cables and green or red weapon cases.
