it may have been true back in the late 80s/early 90s where your only information about a game's quality was the publisher on the box, playing the previous game or reading a paid magazine for nerds
but nowadays people watch trailers and reviews and shit, their purchase is based on far different factors than their experience with the previous game, especially when releases are like 10 years apart now, more than enough time for cattle to forget regardless, the number one factor right now is probably if their peers bought it or if they saw their favorite jewtuber/streamer play it
had anyone even heard of helldivers 1? did sonic forces' bad reputation stop frontiers from selling better than any sonic game in a decade? if crash 5 was pure undistilled kino and everyone was raving about it, would you (or anyone else) not purchase it simply because you didn't like crash 4?
