burning CDs is a crapshoot, you can burn at 1x and verify and get no errors yet somehow it can still be a bad burn.
I burn PS1 games at 10x on a generic USB optical drive and I get good results like 80% of the time, sometimes they have audio/fmv skipping and others they dont even after prolonged use, I tend to switch between imgburn, alcohol 120% and cdrtfe whenever I get a bad burn, I think Alcohol with the PlayStation profile works the best.
I do believe CD brand is important though, I had some super shitty cds I got for cheap and they had godawful skipping or wouldn't load at all but when I swapped to Verbatim Inkjet CDs I didnt had nearly as much of an issue with my burns.
