Playstation 2 Homebrew and Modding Thread
https://youtu.be/uNmjvVN_Q6w
Thread for everything involving modding or hacking your PS2.
Was wondering what's the current best way to load ps2 games from USB? I know that neutrino has done a lot of improvements lately and I think there's more loaders besides OPL to load games now (with better compatibility too afaik).
Also I think I saw a Snesticle build that was finally able to load games via USB, any info on that?

if you absolutely must, neutrino.
otherwise get any micro pc like a nanopi neo or raspberry pi zero 2 (though, you will need a usb eth adapter with a rpi zero) or similar, load dietpi and set up udpbd-server.
you'll have high compatibility and zero fmv lag.

Best ps2 piracy is modchipped + burned disc
Second is softmod + esr patched burned dvd
If your dvd drive isn't working:
Third is hard drive with official network adadptor
Fourth is hard drive with unofficial network adaptor
Fifth is firewire hard drive (barely anyone does this but there's an opl build for it)
Sixth is SMB share over Ethernet (best method for unmodded slim ps2)
Seventh is memory card adapter
Eighth and worst is USB 1.1

I've heard that on PS3 OPL, USB and Ethernet work much better because the ports are faster but I haven't tried it.

skill issue.
smb works as fast as udpbd. kingdom hearts intro fmv doesn't skip.
the advantage of udpbd is that it's easier to use. not even easier to set up, the setup is as involved as smb for the average user, just easy to use on the ps2 itself.

Is there a way to get BIN/CUE games burned into a DVD that works? My PS2 is super picky with CDs.
Converting them to ISO with OPL Manager doesn't work, and adding dummy files to the game then saving it as a PS2 ISO via UltraISO only worked with 3 games out of all the ones I have.

I tried doing the ultraiso method and using some old ass program that supposedly converts the inner files of the games to be dvd compatible but no luck, the only ones that worked (with ultraiso) were SVC Chaos, Ridge Racer V and Oni.

either Caprice32 or CrocoDS, looking into installing everything for compiling, its beyond my knowledge, hoping theres someone here who can do it in seconds with their eyes closed.

MSX works great with the fmsx core massive improvement over the standalone emulator, so amstrad should be do-able, since its a mostly unknown outside of europe it doesnt get much love despite have some quality games which in some cases were superior to other 8 bits

Exactly it's version 1.4.1

Officially here is the list of compatible games

https://www.scummvm.org/compatibility/1.4.1/

supports mouse and keyboard although you can only put mouse because the program boots from a pendrive in the usb port. You must put it in a folder inside a pendrive with enough space to put the games there.

With respect to the games, I comment you that sam & max and Full Throttle work wonderfully and these are games that consume enough resources.

>>11811347
I would like to tell you that in the latest OPL they added the memory cache option to the usb drives. I tested it in R: Racing Evolution and in most of the games that worked in the last version of the OPL and I was surprised by the fluidity of the cinematics (every few minutes there is a braking of a couple of milliseconds and the cinematics continue to work perfectly).

The idea that burnt discs wear out the laser more is unproven pseudoscience at best, and at worst a disingenuous comparison between pressed discs and low-quality burns. A mint condition Verbatim DVD-R burnt at low speeds will factually and undeniably stress the laser less than an official PS2 disc with 20+ years worth of scratches. It is also amusing that you are telling pirates – people who care fuck all about buyfagging – to exclusively reserve their disc drive for buyfag games. Not to mention replacement lasers are cheap.

Yo, anons I need help

Decided to boot up my MX4SIO last night after about a month of not using it, haven't changed anything.
Now, all of a sudden it won't load games. It will load the opening logos and sometimes the main menu, but if you try to get in the actual game? Nothing.
I've tried it with Vice City, Ape Escape 2, Lego Star Wars 2, Crazy Taxi, and Budokai Tenkaichi 3.
Anyone know what could be wrong? I noticed the blue light tends to stop flashing when I actually try to get into the game.
None of the files seem to be corrupted on the SD cards and I just cleaned them with 91% isopropyl alcohol to no avail.
I also have 2 MX4SIOs, 1 I've been using, and 1 spare I got out of the packaging just to test, same problem.
I only have a couple guesses which would be the FMCB card (but you can just rip that out after booting the game so highly unlikely) or my port for my Memcard 2 slot (which I've never had problems with or really used before having a MX4SIO).
I believe my OPL is Grimdoomer's 1.2.0.
I'm stumped, I haven't done anything and I could really use some help.

burning CDs is a crapshoot, you can burn at 1x and verify and get no errors yet somehow it can still be a bad burn.
I burn PS1 games at 10x on a generic USB optical drive and I get good results like 80% of the time, sometimes they have audio/fmv skipping and others they dont even after prolonged use, I tend to switch between imgburn, alcohol 120% and cdrtfe whenever I get a bad burn, I think Alcohol with the PlayStation profile works the best.
I do believe CD brand is important though, I had some super shitty cds I got for cheap and they had godawful skipping or wouldn't load at all but when I swapped to Verbatim Inkjet CDs I didnt had nearly as much of an issue with my burns.

I got some slightly different results but no dice. However I did get it working

If anyone here is trying to get ScummVM to work on PS2 with USB, don’t bother if you have a 70012 model, possibly any 700xx. I switched to my 75004 and it worked. However it still wasn’t easy

1. Only use ScummVM 1.4.1
2. Place ScummVM on your thumbdrive like mass:/APPS/ScummVM, as in those exact folder names
3. Make sure your console clock is running, if the cmos battery is dead it’s fine to just go in and set the clock so it starts running
4. Run SCUMMVM.ELF by booting a uLaunchElf configured to autorun it (you can find a download for a ready-made folder setup, it you can’t be bothered). The uLaunchElf also goes in the mass:/APPS/ScummVM folder like everything else

From there you should be able to add games by giving them individual folders inside mass:/APPS/ScummVM/games/gametitlehere (you can probably place these game folders wherever, but why would you)

probably, but if it says version 1.93 it may be a genuine matrix since that was the last official update. fake ones usually say 1.99 to make it look more updated.

ive never burned a dual layer disc for ps2, on xbox 360 you had to burn at x2.5, any higher and it wouldn't read the disc properly or at all.

also back in the day i shrunk god of war 2 to fit on a single layer using certain tools, one was pssdown, you'd drag and drop the video files in to the program 3 times to down sample them, then rebuild the iso using ps2cdgen or some shit along with some others, i forget it was 20yrs ago,

anyway there were similar tools for shrinking gran turismo 4 to a single layer, i never got it to work and the disc wouldnt load, i was obviously doing something wrong.

my point being you may as well look for an iso someone has already shrunk for single layer, just watch out for any that have had fmvs or shit ripped.

Unfortunately, almost all of the tutorials on how to create these kinds of ISO files that I found online are videos in Spanish or Portuguese with broken links. The best I found was a Portuguese tutorial, which should be easier to translate with Google Translate or DeepL since it is written.

The best part is that it contains links to all the necessary tools and explains how to proceed in different situations. For instance, Step 5 explains how to proceed if one of the games came on a CD instead of a DVD.
